Kokoda Track Trek

7-day trek across the historic military trail

The Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea is one of the world’s great hiking trails. Physical fitness and mental strength are essential qualities for those who tackle this challenging but rewarding trek.

The 96 kilometre track spans the majestic Owen Stanley Range from Ower's Corner in the south to the village of Kokoda in the north.  On this trek you will visit remote highland communities and see first-hand many of the historic battle sites of the Kokoda Campaign of World War Two.

Your group (maximum 14) will be accompanied by an experienced Australian host and professional crew of local porters and guides.

Our Kokoda experience begins with a visit to Bomona War Cemetery, the resting place of many Australian soldiers who fought along the track.

Setting out from Ower's Corner, we follow the track along high ridges and steep slopes, walking up to 15km each day. Your guide will brief you daily on the military history of the area and your team of porters will set up camp and prepare all meals along the way.

Toward the end of our trek we reach the Isurava Memorial, erected on the site of one of the most desperate battles of the Kokoda campaign. Here we conduct a brief ceremony of remembrance and contemplate the values of Kokoda; courage, endurance, mateship and sacrifice.

From Isurava we hike down to the village of Kokoda for our flight back to Port Moresby.  A hot shower and good meal in the comfort of the Port Moresby Yacht Club conclude our adventure.

It is vitally important that you are well prepared for this trek. We offer comprehensive advice on all aspects of your preparation and invite you to join our complementary training walks in Brisbane and Toowoomba.

Black Cat Trek

6-day trek across the war-time jungle path

The Black Cat Track is a tough overland trail in Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. It runs from the village of Salamaua on the coast of the Huon Gulf (north-east coast of PNG) south into the mountains to the township of Wau. Often described as ‘Kokoda 30 years ago’, this is an undeveloped trail through the heart of PNG.

The Black Cat Track was first used by Westerners in the 1920s and 30s as a trail for prospectors seeking gold in Wau. During World War II it became the theatre for savage fighting between the Japanese
and the Allies. The Japanese planned to take Wau at the southern end of the Black Cat Track and launch a major offensive on Port Moresby using the Wau Allied air base. From March 1943, first Australian and then both Australian and US soldiers bravely drove the Japanese 18th army back along the track towards Salamaua, finally retaking the town in September of the same year.

Today many relics from WWII can still be seen; including an American B17 bomber which crashed not far from the track. Mortars, machine guns and much other ordinance is also still in place more than
half a century later.

During this trek you’ll face the physical challenge of a raw jungle track in a remote area rarely visited by westerners. You’ll also discover village jungle-life and an aspect of our military history which is just
now coming to light.

Our adventure begins with a flight from Brisbane to Port Moresby and then another flight on to Lae the next morning. From here we travel by four-wheel-drive to Wau and the start of the track. Our five-day trek follows a rugged path that clings to mountainsides, crosses rivers and picks its way past waterfalls. The adventure concludes with a memorable raft trip down the Francisco River to Salamaua
and a relaxing swim on the beach.

The next day, after breakfast, we’ll take a boat back to Lae for our flight to Port Moresby and a celebratory dinner before departing for Brisbane the next day.
